EDITORIAL
On the occasion of release this issue, I thank God who has always given me power to write.
‘All Virtues Are Thine, None Mine
Without Good Deeds, There Can Be No Devotion’
Every human being born on this earth has the desire to gain maximum during the life and emancipation of his soul afterwards. In the entire visible creation of God, if one earns a good name or is praised throughout the world, it is the greatness of the Almighty who gives everything without any desire for a return. Whosoever believes in this doctrine, knows the bliss his heart receives as he gets a rare willpower and determination and strength of mind.
Nobody becomes pious or sinner by merely saying but by his deeds. Many of us waste away the gifts bestowed on us by over-indulgence. Many fools are their who receive his blessings but deny whereas countless are in perpetual distress and hunger. It is only the merits and demerits, the deeds rendered by being, which are counted.
Only those who have contemplated and toiled truthfully, have glowing faces and emancipated souls.
Thus when mind gets polluted with sins, it can be purified only by good deeds and service of mankind and humbleness and devotion which please Thee- The God- The Governor of this Cosmos.
So dear readers believe in your goodness and practice good deeds which is only way to success not only on this worldly path but on the spiritual path also. I extent my heartiest thanks to writers as well as the readers of “Cup of Knowledge” with whose kind cooperation this edition is going to be published successfully.
I specially thanks to Rev. Arun Sareen, a man of nice and cooperative nature and Rev. Amit Mehta, a loftiest person, who have been contributed to the completion of this magazine. I am also thankful to readers for their precious feedback.

PARABLE
We see a moth sitting on the chimney of a lamp and its shadow on the wall opposite. If we want to remove the moth, we must remove it form the chimney. It will be no use attacking its shadow on the wall. Similarly, all our negative thoughts and feelings like jealousy, hatred and violence originate from the mind. So they have to be attacked and tackled on the mind itself. No efforts elsewhere will be of any use. For this let the Almighty dwell in the mind. Since God is the supreme source of all that is good and noble, once the Almighty dwells in the mind, all that the mind produces will be good and noble only.
UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD – SANT NIRANKARI MISSION
The multi-dimensional Fourth Pledge
“Not to become a pretentious sage or saint; to live the life of a normal householder and to earn one’s livelihood through honest work.”
The above is one of the five permanent pledges we make at the time of receiving Braham Gyan. These oaths form a committed basis of a life-long agreement with our Satguru.
A cursory glance would enable us to discover the following few visible components in this Fourth Pledge:
Affectation / pretension of being a saint is totally prohibited for us. This would include a ban on commercial priestly activities / ritualism including paid recitations and religious practices on our part;
Normal family life including happy married life , parenthood, childhood, togetherness and mutual care / emotional intelligence in all respects is to be ensured ;
Working honestly for one’s livelihood and looking after one’s own as well as one’s family’s economic needs is mandatory for us ;
In case of those in the non-working age-group ( children), sincere inputs for studies and career-planning are to be made; and
Socio-economic development of one’s family, society, country as well as humanity at large with the highest level of commitment and sincerity is to be pursued.
All unenlightened religious activities are to be reconsidered. Whether or not, these are in accordance with the original teachings of holy prophets? Whether or not, these are counter-productive to human development and welfare? and
Good living including good diet, good clothes and good housing.
It is quite evident that the Fourth Pledge along with four other tenants is a pre-requisite to leading a Nirankari life. A Nirankari would save immense amounts of economic resources (time, energy and money) which are otherwise drained unduly and wastefully in rites and rituals, not approved by holy prophets. He is prompted to productively utilize the same on socio-economic development from micro to macro levels.
Every word said by our Satguru is always full of very deep meaning, encompassing each and every human being’s happiness and welfare in a quite scientific manner. So is the role of the Fourth Pledge in all-human affairs on our planet.

"Mothers Are the Place Where Love"Mothers are the place where loveEmerges from the earth, And happiness rings out like bells In honor of our birth. Mothers are the sun that lightsFor life our inner sky,So we may know that we are lovedAnd need not question why. Mothers are the moon that shinesUpon our black despair,So even when we weep, we knowThat someone's always there. Whatever fear, or stress, or painMight them to anger move,We know that underneath the stormWe have, always, their love. By: Shivani

YOUR QUESTION AND YOUR ANSWER
Steps should be taken by parents to make their children good human being:
There are different aspects to look at this question and there are many important steps which parents should take in order to make their child, a good human being. Let us approach it through in a logical manner.
When we learn computers, a simple theory which is to be understood is, Garbage-in and Garbage-out, which means, we get the output according to the input we fed. If we feed the right input, then we are going to get the right kind of output but the converse is also true.
The same theory applies to the human brain and every parent should understand this theory. The kind of input they are going to feed in to the brain of their child will give them the respective output. If parents feed positive inputs like ‘you can achieve everything in life’, ‘you should follow the teaching of true master’, ‘you should respect your elders’, ‘you should not use abusive language’, ‘you should not drink or smoke’ and so on; in to the brain of their child, it will result in a positive output but every negative input like ‘you can not be successful in life’, ‘your friend is better than you’, ‘watch TV but do not disturb me’ and so on; will result in a negative output or growth of child.
It all depends upon parents how they program their child’s brain. As I always say, it is good news, ‘everything in your hand’ but it also happens to be the bad news if you do not apply it.
“Amit mehta”
It is one of those essential facts of life that raising good children--children of character--demands time and attention. While having children may be doing what comes naturally, ¨ being a good parent is much more complicated. Here are tips to help your children in building sturdy characters:
1. Put parenting first. This is hard to do in a world with so many competing demands. Good parents consciously plan and devote time to parenting. They make developing their children's character their top priority.
2. Review how you spend the hours and days of your week. Think about the amount of time your children spend with you. Plan how you can weave your children into your social life and knit yourself into their lives.
3. Be a good example. Face it: human beings learn primarily through modeling. In fact, you can’t avoid being an example to your children, whether good or bad. Being a good example, then, is probably your most important job.4. Develop an ear and an eye for what your children are absorbing. Children are like sponges. Much of what they take in has to do with moral values and character. Books, songs, TV, the Internet, and films are continually delivering messages, moral and immoral, to our children. As parents we must control the flow of ideas and images that are influencing our children.
5. Use the language of character. Children cannot develop a moral compass unless people around them use the clear, sharp language of right and wrong.
6. Punish with a loving heart. Today, punishment has a bad reputation. The results are guilt-ridden parents and self-indulgent, out-of-control children. Children need limits. They will ignore these limits on occasion. Reasonable punishment is one of the human beings have always learned. Children must understand what punishment is for and know that its source is parental love.
7. Learn to listen to your children. It is easy for us to tune out the talk of our children. One of the greatest things we can do for them is to take them seriously and set aside time to listen.
8. Get deeply involved in your child’s school life. School is the main event in the lives of our children. Their experience there is a mixed bag of triumphs and disappointments. How they deal with them will influence the course of their lives. Helping our children become good students is another name for helping them acquire strong character.
9. Make a big deal out of the family meal. One of the most dangerous trends in present is the dying of the family meal. The dinner table is not only a place of sustenance and family business but also a place for the teaching and passing on of our values. Manners and rules are subtly absorbed over the table. Family mealtime should communicate and sustain ideals that children will draw on throughout their lives.
11. Take your children to religious congregations: As they learn there how to behave, and learn how well and for what they are be in today world.
As parents, we want our children to be the architects of their own character crafting, while we accept the responsibility to be architects of the environment, physical and moral. We need to create an environment in which our children can develop habits of honesty, generosity, and a sense of justice. For most of us, the greatest opportunity we personally have to deepen our own character is through the daily blood, sweat and tears of struggling to be good parents.

CAREER KNOCK
First Impression is last impression
Your clothes are talking about you! Not in words, of course, but in dozens of quiet, often unsuspected ways. What you wear expresses how you feel about yourself. What your clothes say about you is within your control. To wear clothing in the best way, you first need to know all about you.
Looking your best always demands careful attention to personal grooming and the clothing that you wear. The first and foremost rule is that you must be the center of attention during a job interview, not your clothes. To do this, be conscious of your total appearance. Determine if your appearance is suitable for you and appropriate for getting the job that you want.
First Impressions
You only have one chance to make a good first impression! A person will size you up in a matter of 15 seconds as you walk into the room! What you wear says a whole lot about who you are, or at least who you are presenting yourself to be. That’s why what you wear to a job interview is important. Whether you like it or not, the first impression that you make is visual. This means paying attention to every little detail - from head to toe - is important.

The Importance of Telephone Skills
Telephone skills are the most important aspect of being successful in a job. When you work on the phone, the telephone is the one and only tool that will make or break your success.
Some people will find that they have a knack for these skills, and it will be easy to learn and implement the skills a company offers in training. Others may have to work at it a little harder, but it is far from impossible if you are dedicated to being the best call center customer service agent you can be.
I was lucky to have a knack for these skills, but I’ve met plenty of people and helped many people that had to work at it to truly grasp the whole concept of what good telephone skills were all about.
Telephone skills
Smiling: Smiles and gestures can easily be heard over the phone, so keeping that smile on your face helps to create a positive engagement with customer every time you talk to them.
Empathy: If you can’t put yourself in a customer’s shoes especially when you know they are wrong, how can you understand why they have the feelings they do about the issues they have called in about? If you cannot come to an understanding of why a customer is calling, it’s practically impossible to help them in any positive way.
Problem Solving SkillsNo question about it, when you work as a customer service agent, you will get problem calls that require some solving. Generally, the company you work for will offer the tools to solve any problem a customer may have, but it is your job to learn how to use them effectively.
These are just a couple of the most important skills needed when working in customer service, but these will definitely get the ball rolling for an honest career in this field.
It goes beyond simply knowing what these skills are and what they can do to help an agent succeed. Practice makes perfect is what you hear many people say, and the saying fits perfectly into this equation.
Telephone skills
Apart from interviews, the other way of making a personal impression is over the phone, so it is worth brushing up on your telephone skills: your voice creates 80% of your impact.
Three areas need attention:
Planning and preparing for calls
Telephone techniques
Receiving calls
Plan and prepare: Before you make any call, be sure that you know:
Your objective – the outcome you want to achieve by the end of the conversation
(A meeting with a contact, a specific piece of information)
What you want to get across
What you need from the other person.
Write yourself an agenda in the same way that you would for a meeting and use it as a prompt.
Making calls
Here are some pointers that other job seekers have found helpful:
Smile – your voice conveys it.
Sit upright or stand – this helps you to sound enthusiastic and positive because you are using energy (relaxing comfortably tends to make you sound relaxed and comfortable!)
Speak more slowly than normal.
Introduce yourself clearly, using both your first name and surname.
Make the call from a private phone, away from noise and distractions.
Keep a record of who you spoke to and when, what you discussed and any follow-up action that you promised to take.
Tips for making better calls
After giving your name, put yourself in context so that the receiver knows who you are:
‘I have applied for the vacancy of…’
‘I recently wrote to you about…’
‘Your name was given to me by…’
Clarify the purpose of your call. ‘I’m ringing to find out more about the interview procedure.’
Some people are difficult to locate or shielded by secretaries. Do not be put off by the secretary. Say firmly and politely that you want to talk to the principal and ask the best time to call back.
The best time to catch people may be early or late in the day. Think about making your calls before 9.15am and after 4.30pm.
Receiving phone calls
Your response to incoming calls also needs to create a businesslike impression.
Keep a pen, notepad, diary and a copy of your CV by the phone at all times.
Answer as you would if you were working: ‘Good morning, Clifton 845636’.
If the caller does not say who they are, ask. You need to know whom you are talking to and why.
Brief the family to take good messages. You will be judged in your absence.
If the call is inconvenient or you are not prepared, say that you are unable to talk at the moment and they will call you back at a mutually convenient time.
Use an answer machine. This allows you to screen calls if you wish. It also allows you to speak later when the house is quieter or you are more composed.

COVER STORY: Recession
Rise of less working hours in a company?
The most panic global problem facing the world today is- Recession. What does it means? In simple words, a recession is a general slow down in economic activity in a country over a sustained period of time. In recession there is decline in real GDP (Gross Domestic Product) due to increase of inflation & this result in decline of real income, employment, industrial production and wholesale-retail sales and due to this there is reduction of supply of goods & service in market. To reduce supply of goods & services, concerned industry will automatically reduce there production as required. Due to reduction in production workers does not have sufficient work to process in production industry and employer will require reducing cost expense by cutting jobs of employees as per requirement. This will cause many employees jobless and existing employees will work in stressful environment of job insecurity and this will not favorable for both employee & employer.
But recently in US famous employers- Pella and City of Atlanta Authority applied a simple but unique policy to reduce cost expense of employer. They are cutting working hours of employees and automatically there will be reduction in salary of employee, and mostly employees are satisfied with this policy. Doing this employer will not reduce his experienced employees easily and this will also reduce maintaining cost other than salary provided by employer to employee. “If a company can keep people on until the business turns around, the company would be in much better shape to ramp up quickly.” -As per experts opinion, this policy can play a measure role to reduce period of recession.

There was a blind boy who was sitting on the steps outside a building with a hat in his hand and a sign was lying near his feet saying “I AM BLIND, PLEASE HELP ME". There were only few coins lying in the hat.
A man was walking by and read the sign & put some coins in the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around & wrote some words on it. He put the sign back so that all the people passing by could read the new words. Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. Later that afternoon the man who had changed the words on the sign came back to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked him, "Were you the one who had changed my sign this morning? What did you write?"
The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I wrote what you had said but using different words". He had rewritten the sign as "Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it."
The message given by both the blind boy and the other man were the same. However the words used by the man were more positive and left the image on all the people looking at the sign and the blind boy was optimistic & lived life to the fullest.
Similarly saints know & understand the importance of always living one's life with a positive and different attitude.

Tips when watching TV
Sit so you're well supported - avoid spending prolonged periods on soft couches or bean bags.
Change your position regularly - if you're watching for long periods, take turns sitting on the couch, chair, or floor.
Use a lumbar roll, or rolled towel, behind your lower back (about belt line) to provide support whilst sitting.
"Half positions" can be worst on your neck and back - avoid sitting with your low back unsupported or lying with your head crooked up on one side.
Position your TV well - try to have the set directly in front of you, at mid vision height.
Stretch - use commercial breaks to change positions and do gentle stretches.
Keep yourself physically active - have a break from viewing and walk to the local shops or continue with your exercise routine.
Be inspired by the athletes - remember to eat and sleep well.
If you experience pain while sitting, you need to change positions or get moving.
